Aamodt / Plumb was founded with an optimistic spirit and a simple goal: to enhance people’s lives through design.
That sounds easy enough but the process that led us there was not. After four years in the rigorous architectural design program at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, on the eve of her thesis presentation in 2002, Mette went blind in her right eye. Chalking it up to stress, we both pitched in to get the project completed. A few weeks later, after graduation, she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis.
We faced starting a career in a field infamous for 80-hour weeks, all-nighters and low pay knowing this was at odds with Mette’s condition.
Our very first project was to use the design thinking we learned in school to design our lives for long-term health, happiness and productivity. And once we had figured that out (after years of trying) we wanted to help others do the same.
We founded Aamodt / Plumb Architects to promote better living through design.
Since 2007 our office has been dedicated to improving the lives of our clients and employees by applying design thinking to the everyday. Statistically, people spend over 90% of their lives indoors, usually at home or work, and it is these “everyday” spaces where we can make the greatest positive impact.
We believe that everyone should benefit from good architecture and design. So we set out to be accessible and transparent, communicate in a straightforward way, provide resources and free tools to the public and treat our clients and employees like family.
We think working with an architect should be easy and fun, that clients should get beautiful, yet practical, solutions to their problems and real value for their investment.
Our shared Nordic heritage is an undercurrent in our design and business philosophy. Mette is Norwegian and Andrew’s family is Swedish and Finnish. Our love for the simple things in life, for quality, directness and fairness shows in our design and business.
