Tim Bell
PROFILE
Bell Phillips Architects was established in 2004 after Tim Bell and Hari Phillips won an international design competition to carry out a major regeneration project in East London. From this first £8 million project the practice has grown and diversified with a portfolio that currently includes a wide range of projects across a number of sectors.
The practice has a strong track record of high quality design, as demonstrated through high profile competition wins, awards and features in publications and exhibitions. Nevertheless, Bell Phillips Architects’ approach is grounded in a fundamental understanding of the technical, financial and practical issues which ensures that our designs are viable and deliverable. The practice work at all stages from feasibility studies, through to planning applications, detail design and production information.
Recent highly publicised projects include Gasholder Park – a tranquil new public space in King’s Cross that sits inside a carefully restored guide frame of a large Victorian gasholder – and several public housing schemes including Greenwich Housing – shortlisted in the 2016 RICS, RIBA and Placemaking Awards - and Derry Avenue – winner of a 2016 RIBA East award which contributed to Bell Phillips Architects being named 2016 RIBA East architect of the year.
BIOGRAPHY
Tim Bell
Tim Bell studied at Edinburgh College of Art, obtaining a first class degree and L’Ecole d’Architecture de Paris Belleville gaining his professional practice qualifications from the Bartlett School of Architecture. Following his studies, he worked in architectural practices in Paris, Oslo and London, gaining experience in commercial and civic architecture and urban design. Tim was an RIBA Rome scholar 1998-99, carrying out funded research at The British School at Rome. At Bell Phillips Architects, Tim is involved in all stages of each project in the office, but takes particular responsibility for detail design and construction, as well as practice management and business development. Tim speaks fluent French and Italian.
Hari Phillips
Hari Phillips studied at the University of Bath, gaining a first class degree; Escola Tecnica de Arquitectura Superior in Barcelona; University of East London; and gained his professional qualifications from the Bartlett School of Architecture. Hari worked in practice on a number of high profile and award-winning projects and was an Associate Director at Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands prior to setting up Bell Phillips 2004. Hari currently sits on the Steering Group of the Bermondsey Neighbourhood Forum: an organisation recently awarded vanguard status by the government to produce a neighbourhood plan for one of the fastest developing areas in the UK.
At Bell Phillips architects Hari is significantly involved in all major projects and he assumes particular responsibility for the initial stages of projects including competition submissions, feasibility studies, strategic analysis and planning applications.
