Klein Dytham Architecture

Klein Dytham architecture (KDa) is a multi-disciplinary design practice known for architecture, interiors, public spaces and installations. Established by Royal College of Art graduates Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham in Tokyo in 1991, today KDa is a multi-lingual office with an international reputation and a high-profile client list which includes Google, Tsutaya, Sony, Virgin Atlantic, Nike, Uniqlo, Selfridges and Japan Rail.

KDa's built work includes flagship retail stores, restaurants, resort facilities, office fit-outs, houses and private residences. KDa has no stylistic recipe, preferring to work with the client, program and other project parameters to develop a uniquely tailored solution. Materials, technology, and context are all key elements of KDa's design approach, spiced always with an irreverent or surprising twist.

For KDa, Tokyo is a constant source of inspiration and creative energy. The Japanese thirst for the new, a sensitivity to material and detail in crafting, and an ever-changing urban environment invigorate KDa's thinking and production. In 2003 Mark and Astrid devised PechaKucha Night as an event for Tokyo designers to meet and share their work – it has now grown into an international network with events running in over 900 cities around the globe, inspiring creatives worldwide. KDa spans east and west, offering the boldness of vision that only an outside perspective can bring.

Astrid Klein Biography
Astrid Klein was born in Italy to German parents, schooled in France, educated in Britain and since 1988 has lived and worked in Japan. After a Masters degree from the Royal College of Art in London Astrid was drawn to Japan by the simplicity of design, attention to detail and the freedom from traditional constraints. In Tokyo she began working for Toyo Ito and in 1991 she co-founded Klein Dytham architecture with Mark Dytham. Astrid is a frequent guest at international conferences on design and architecture and has lectured or held teaching positions at universities in Japan, the UK, the USA, Australia and throughout Europe.

Mark Dytham Biogrpahy
Born in the UK, Mark studied architecture at the Royal College of Art in London. In 1989 he traveled with business partner Astrid Klein to Tokyo, and together they found work with Toyo Ito. They soon established Klein Dytham architecture, working freely across disciplines including architecture, interiors, furniture, installations and events. Mark is a frequent guest speaker at international design events, has taught at universities in Japan and beyond and in 2000 was awarded an MBE (Member of the British Empire) for services to British Design in Japan.
