Lighting Design International

Sally Storey, Design Director of Lighting Design International, is one of the country’s leading lighting experts. Much of her time is spent travelling all over the world to design lighting schemes for individual and corporate clients. She has written two very successful, well-received books on the subject of lighting and is regularly asked to speak at top interior design events.

Sally was awarded a scholarship to train as an architect at Bristol University, where she developed her passion for lighting after studying windows, daylight and stairs. During this time, she started to work with John Cullen, widely acknowledged as a pioneer of modern lighting in the United Kingdom. On his death in 1986, Sally began to run the business. She recognized that, in addition to the individual clients’ domestic design schemes, there was a need for a separate area of the business as a lighting design consultant on larger commercial projects such as office developments, museums and hotels. As a result, Lighting Design International was set up, with Sally as Design Director.

Sally heads up the design team which employs people from different backgrounds, including architectural, theatrical, product and environmental design, as well as electrical engineering.
Sally has specifically employed designers from different backgrounds to enhance the strength of the design team.



If one had to design LDI's style, it would be "classical and understated". Generally their schemes are focused on low-key lighting. However when circumstances are appropriate colour and animation are introduced. The strength of LDI is that they bring together both a creative and intelligent approach to lighting design with an understanding of the complex technical requirements. Independent of all manufacturers, the focus is solely on achieving the most creative lighting solutions for clients in terms of aesthetics, function, flexibility, maintenance and cost.

2003 was a defining year for LDI as they were the toast of the Lighting Design Awards winning the Leisure Award for their work at Chancery Court Spa - the judges said of the scheme "high quality lighting on a sensible budget" - and the Retail, Restaurants and Hotels Award for Threadneedles Hotel. 
In 2004 the firm won the Lighting Design of the Year Award at the British Interior Design Awards 2004 for its work on Lumière.
