Studio Gang

Jeanne Gang leads Studio Gang Architects, an architectural practice noted for its innovation and leadership in design. Through exploration and research early in the design process, Ms. Gang’s work has staked out new creative territory in materials, technology and sustainability. Her work with Studio Gang has received national and international awards and recognition, and has been featured at the International Venice Biennale, the National Building Museum, and the Art Institute of Chicago.

Ms. Gang’s work includes a wide variety of culturally relevant building typologies, such as the Starlight Theatre in Rockford, Illinois and the Kam Liu Building, a community center in Chicago’s Chinatown neighborhood. Her recent projects include the SOS Community Center on Chicago’s South Side and the Ford Calumet/Environmental Center, which will begin construction later this year. On a larger scale, she designed the Aqua Tower, an 82-story mixed-use high-rise currently under construction in downtown Chicago and created a master plan for the City of Hamburg’s Hafen City quarter.

Ms. Gang’s practice includes a continuing commitment to architectural education. In addition to serving as an adjunct professor at the Illinois Institute of Technology since 1998, she was a visiting professor at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design in 2004, was the Louis I. Kahn Visiting Professor at the Yale School of Architecture in 2005, and was a visiting lecturer at Princeton University’s School of Architecture in 2007. Ms. Gang was also chosen to lecture as one of the Architecture League of New York’s Emerging Voices in the spring of 2006, and she received an Academy Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters in the same year.

Studio Gang is a leading architecture practice whose design work addresses buildings, landscapes and cities. Founded by Jeanne Gang in 1997, the office has grown to include 35 full-time staff collaborating on national and international projects. The studio actss as a lab for testing ideas on every scale, from cities to material properties. This sensibility is demonstrated by projects such as the Marble Curtain and SOS Community Center, which reconsiders the tall building as a site-specific structure. With a process that begins with research and exploration, the studio has produced a growing body of work that responds to ist specific pace purpose. Studio Gang has received national and international recognition for its innovative and sustainable designs, and was most recently honored with an award of High Commendation for the SOS Community Center at the World Architecture Festival in Barcelona.
