Profile
Marie-Therese Harnoncourt-Fuchs and Ernst J. Fuchs founded the next ENTERprise Architects in 2000 in Vienna, Austria. From the beginning tnE have operated in a field that ranges from experimental installations to architectural practice, treating both approaches as equal and mutually influential. An explicitly experimental and exploratory approach and the close relationship between theory and practice, architecture and art are trademarks of the Vienna architectural office. The body and the city are key areas for research and sources of inspiration for the continuous development of an approach that understands architecture to be, above all, the adventure of the conquering of space. In keeping with this, the buildings, exhibition design and installations produced by tnE reject any predictable and clear functional logic. With their complex spatial dramaturgies, dramatic correspondence between interior and exterior, volume and void and a wealth of surprising details, the works of tnE are also invariably a self-confident expression of architecture as an autonomous cultural force.
Projects like the Zirl House / AT, Underground Swimming Pool / AT, Audiolounge / AT, Trinkbrunnen / AT, Lakeside Bath Caldaro / IT, Cloud Tower - Open-air stage and Cloud No.7 pavilion Grafenegg/ AT, Auer-Welsbach-Straße / AT, Archaeological Center Mainz / GER, competition 1st prize, Noeklius _ informed sculpture / AT, Fidesser House / AT have been widely published and awarded. Furthermore the studio was nominated for the Iakov Chernikhov International Prize and three times for the Mies van der Rohe Award.
Their projects and installations have been shown among others at Archilab Orléans / FR, ’olien spaces’ for Latent Utopias at Steirischer Herbst / AT, ’how to start a city’ for performative materialism at La Bienal de São Paulo / Brazil, Manifesta / IT, La Biennale di Venezia / IT, ’Fractional Systems’ at MAK Center for Art and Architecture, Mackey Garages, Los Angeles/USA, ’silent conquest’ for Vienna for Art´s Sake at the Winterpalais Belvedere Vienna / AT, Aedes Gallery Berlin / GER. Their project UN/COMMON SPACE UN/DEFINED LIVING for "Places for People" was presented at the 15th International Architecture Exhibition LA BIENNALE DI VENEZIA 2016 in Venice / IT at the Austrian pavilion.
Marie-Therese Harnoncourt-Fuchs and Ernst J. Fuchs are invited for academic teachings, talks and lectures both nationally and internationally.
