wd3 – Westermann and Daubner join together and found a product design company: Michael Daubner and Frank Westermann, both born in 1963, both with a solid craft training and both with a solid, artisanal approach to design. The similar biographies diverged, when Frank Westermann in 1992 joined the management board of Karl Westermann GmbH & Co. KG, one of the leading German experts in finish carpentry including own production facilities and own construction and planning departments. Whereas Westermann dealt with rather individual interior fittings – though using system components developed in-house – Daubner focused on developing architectural systems for the fields of trade fair and office; at first as the development director, later as the managing director of Burkhardt Leitner constructiv GmbH & Co. KG, and from 2010 on in Milos Concepts GmbH.
In 2016, after many years of working in similar fields, Westermann and Daubner together founded wd3 GmbH – as a logic and consequent continuation of their professional careers. In their common product design company, they combine Westermann’s rather individual approach to spatial design with Daubner’s rather systematic principles and therefore create a new whole: “It is the synergies which we will release by merging our experience and knowledge that appealed to me the most, and the innovative impulses we will therefore create, not only in the field of construction but also with respect to materials for example”, Westermann says. “For me, wd3 means the return to my handicraft roots on the one hand, then again linking them with my expertise in system development and bringing both to a new level”, Daubner comments the foundation of wd3 GmbH.
