| Photo: Gianluca Vassallo | | We all know there is strength in numbers, and next month's design extravaganza in Milan is no exception: it's not just the fairgrounds at Rho that will be buzzing with innovation during Milan Design Week. The city will once again come alive with the events of Fuorisalone, which promises to enrich the commercial fair with citywide events, exhibitions and installations under the theme 'Materia Natura.' Similar to the symbiosis between Milan Design Week and its urban context, this year's focus highlights connection as a guiding principle and fundamental value in the creative and design processes. Concepts such as circular economy, reuse and sustainable materials will be on show and collaborations among designers, architects, educational institutions and organisations will drive discussions on shaping a sustainable present and future. Partnering for the first time ever with miart – the international modern and contemporary art fair in Milan – this Fuorisalone promises to present a fruitful fusion of disciplines and signpost ways to create a better future, together. A log of wood grown in Val Susa, a block of ice, a block of lava stone, one of marble and a slab of slate: these five elements have been chosen to abstract the theme launched by Fuorisalone for the 2024 edition, Materia Natura (that can be translated as “matter nature”). Nicola Ricciardi, Artistic Director of miart, has curated the production of this visual storytelling which accompanies the theme. He has thus involved EX., a research and design group that works at the intersection of art, landscape, technology and architecture, formed by architects Andrea Cassi and Michele Versaci, who worked together with Giorgio Ferrero (MYBOSSWAS).
