HELMRINDERKNECHT contemporary design, Berlin
In the everyday life of our time and culture we are surrounded by objects made so precisely and perfectly, that one can hardly spot any trace of the hand of their maker or of the tools used to produce them. The project “Objets mélancoliques“ was generated by the longing for qualities different from the prevalent characteristics of contemporary industrial design. It is an attempt at bringing together attributes of industrial design and handcraft – with the goal to define new criteria of beauty, to give the object a unique character, both archaic and contemporary. In this project the method of production (lost material casting) and the choice of material define the final result as much as the designer himself. The archaic imperfection of casting and a good portion of fortuitousness due to the material (Tombak, an alloy of bronze and brass) determine the final appearance of the vessels, thus giving each object a distinctive character. The vases and bowls come in a limited edition of 6+2AP. More objects will extend the project in the future.
