The project is a family home for an art collector. The existing home was an uninspiring 1980’s Georgian revival home. Our brief was to work within the original footprint to create a home for entertaining and with free flowing connections to the garden.
Our brief was to work within the original footprint to create a home for entertaining and with free flowing connections to the garden. Our design approach, which is a thread running between all our projects, was to seek a balance between restraint and exuberance.
The existing home has very well sized and proportioned rooms, but with poor connections and clutter created by overly ornate faux mouldings. The first decisions were to create clear connections between the principal rooms and to strip out all the faux Georgian detailing and moulding to create a blank canvas.
Once we had established a good flow between the spaces we added a restrained base palette of pale timber floors and warm white walls and ceilings to create a background to the garden beyond and the client’s art collection.
The joinery insertions are neutral but lifted by intricate detailing, all balanced against the background palette. Feature fireplaces are created in solid plaster or gently carved stone, all very contemporary but with references to historical detail. Sustainability is addressed through an eye to longevity. Joinery is crafted from sustainable veneers, and the furniture is sourced from suppliers with high environmental credentials with pieces that will have long lifespans.
