Restaurant 108, Copenhagen is the latest interiors project by Danish Design duo SPACE Copenhagen for renowned chef Rene Redzepi. Boasting characteristic Scandinavian style, the restaurant design features bespoke furniture pieces by SPACE Copenhagen and utilises existing structural elements of the space.
Restaurant Design
Throughout the project SPACE Copenhagen worked with an interplay of two elements, the building itself, a former industrial warehouse, as well as their fascination with the surrounding area of Christianshavn and the use of intense and vibrant colour in this iconic district of the city. Chosen at the beginning of the project, the douche green and midnight blue offer subtle references to the nature and sea and to compliment, SPACE Copenhagen chose red, recognised as ‘the colour of Copenhagen’ – the facades, bricks and roofs.
“We wanted to keep the strong structural elements of the tall, light space, as well as reframe the existing beautiful material palette of concrete, bricks and dark metals.” Says SPACE Copenhagen Co-founder, Signe Bendslev Henrikson. “When working with the various functions of the project, we started using these selected areas as colourful features and accents weaving them into the naked spaces. The bars, the door, the hallway, the back wall, the restrooms etc. – so everywhere you look, you find both elements present. Altogether finding its own relevance and identity.”
Furniture Design
Working with the beauty of the building’s architecture, SPACE Copenhagen have designed and custom made a family of new furniture pieces for the spaces, alongside Bomma’s dominating mouth blown pendants by Design Studio Olgoj Chorchoj and woven chairs by Jørgen Bækmark. SPACE Copenhagen have carefully selected or designed all furniture pieces to last and age with beauty and grace.
SPACE Copenhagen have used their newly Round Accent tables, designed for Mater to server as small islands around the space alongside new dining chairs currently being developed for launch next year. all storage within the space has been created by SPACE and includes wardrobes in blackened steel and stretch metal as well as wood credenzas, which serve as waiting stations throughout the restaurant. Long benches are created from a light solid oak and barstools in dark oak with blackened steel, both with soft carved and curved details. Also in light solid oak, the communal table with long easy benches are significant with their crafted wooden joints.
Restaurant 108 Located next to the new bicycle bridge which connects the inner city and popular Nyhavn to Holme, a buzzing and energetic area of Copenhagen, Restaurant 108 seats around 80 guests and includes a small bar serving coffee and wine. Rene Redzepi has teamed up with former Noma chef Kristian Baumann, who is now working his skills in the kitchen of 108, maintaining the philosophy and values of Noma, still refined and complex, yet more casual and affordable. 108 serves food close to nature and local agriculture, based on a seasonal approach.
