A calling for cabinetry

Full of pride, the craftsmen stand in front of the newly erected kitchen and admire their work. And the Bettwil-based kitchen maker’s display at the Bauen & Modernisieren trade show is certainly impressive. Two exhibits particularly stand out: the dark beauty with the golden wall panels and the small, simple but sophisticated modular kitchen made of Swiss pine. From Rolls-Royce to Mini convertible: when it comes to designing kitchens, Brunner Küchen pulls out all the stops and is a virtuoso in whatever genre is called for – from opera to yodelling. “It’s what our customers want that matters,” says Adrian Bernhard, who has been in charge of the company since 2015. “And it’s often the case that what they want doesn’t stop at the kitchen but includes the surrounding living space as well. The trend is definitely towards us designing the fixtures for the entire interior rather than just the kitchen. Since the kitchen has become the focal point of the home, the adjacent spaces are often essentially part of the kitchen too.”

This holistic approach is no problem for the craftsmen at Brunner Küchen AG – after all, 90 percent of the team are qualified cabinet makers. A love of materials – first and foremost wood – is part of their trade; at the end of the day, whether it’s used to make kitchen furnishings or a wardrobe door is secondary. “But our planning team is also in ever greater demand and is playing an increasingly important role in the team as a whole,” explains Adrian Bernhard, who transferred more competencies and responsibility to the individual departmental heads when he took over the business. In addition, the craftsmen have been instructed to subject products to a quality inspection every time the job changes hands. When the person who glues the edges takes over the cabinet fronts from the master craftsman responsible for veneering them, for instance, it is his job to check whether the freshly veneered panels meet the required standards. This helps avoid mistakes and eliminate faulty pieces from the finishing process early on.
