Making wood visible, emphasising its structures, combining expressive aesthetics with a sensuous feel, refining surfaces with exquisite ingredients such as pigments, resins, waxes and oils – these are just a few of Torben Hansen's alchemistic secrets: "Wood has a personality and a face and our craftsmanship brings both those qualities out." A native of Denmark, Hansen has been sole managing partner of Schotten & Hansen since 2009. Founded by Hansen and its second name-giver in 1984, the company has evolved from a carpentry firm into a producer of hand-crafted floorboards, parquet and interior finishings. The name stands for long-standing international collaboration with leading architects and designers on projects such as luxury yachts, design hotels, castles and private villas.

Every detail matters: meticulously crafted transitions between two materials, ideally proportioned joins and perfectly flush surfaces result in a harmonious overall picture that meets the highest standards of quality and forms a single and consistent entity by coordinating the floors with the walls, door constructions, staircases and skirting boards. Schotten & Hansen's patented naturally-dried wooden floorboards are the result of many years of development: available in a range of woods and colours, they take on a refined patina that conjures up a sense of security and warmth. "Wooden floorboards have to be just as unique as the person that steps on them," says Torben Hansen. "A floor is an emotional decision and an emotional experience, and anyone who allows himself the pleasure of walking on it without shoes will soon come to the conclusion that his bare feet have never experienced anything more sensuous."
