A veritable collection of local designers, installations, live demos and panel discussions make the show a must-attend destination for trade professionals and design lovers of all ages
From May 11-13, BROOKLYN DESIGNS will exhibit over 50 design brands at the heart of the borough’s creative community, the Brooklyn Museum, during the first weekend of NYCxDESIGN. With a freshly curated lens and a new home at a prominent art institution, BROOKLYN DESIGNS will showcase emerging designers and established brands that span a range of design objects including furniture, lighting, tableware, art, textiles, technology and jewelry, many of which have received Brooklyn-Made certification. Beginning with a VIP preview on May 11 and opening to the public from May 12-13, the show is an annual celebration of Brooklyn’s creative history presented by the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce.
Brooklyn is an important hub for both innovation and craftsmanship, bridging the gap between old masterful techniques and contemporary aesthetics. This can be seen in the work of TOKEN, who draws on the European Arts and Crafts movement, Chinese landscape painting and Abstract Expressionism to produce unique, atelier style furniture. Other exhibitors push material boundaries such as Caiu Lighting, whose products include the exquisite artistry of natural stone veneer fixtures, and Fort Makers, an interdisciplinary design firm that focuses on handmade, useful objects with the intention of expanding the definition of art. In a shoppable marketplace, BROOKLYN DESIGNS is excited to introduce concrete jewelry from Kahen_design, ceramic home objects from Demetria Chappo Ceramics, and handmade textiles from Five | Six Textiles, who works with African artisans to bridge the gap between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary aesthetics.
The show’s exhibitors and shoppable market will be supplemented with a compelling lineup of programming including a keynote address by Jonathan Marvel, Founding Principal of Marvel Architects, who will discuss his projects that continue to transform the Brooklyn skyline on Saturday, May 12 at 1pm. The show will also feature Brooklyn’s past, present and future with programming and installations including an exhibit of historic ceramic objects from Brooklyn dating back to the 19th century from the museum’s decorative arts collection, live demos from the Textile Arts Center, and augmented reality architectural prototypes from Pratt Institute’s GAUD M.S. Arch program. Expanding beyond the show’s borders, the Prospect Park Alliance and Turnstile Tours will lead a free design-centric walking tour of Prospect Park, examining the Park’s many layers of natural and human history.
BROOKLYN DESIGNS offers free admission to registered trade and media. For instant updates on the show, follow @BKLYNDESIGNS on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
