The corporate waiting area should be a calm place for gathering thoughts before a productive meeting. All too often, however, the far too minimalist furniture found in these spaces is just uncomfortable. Throughout their 20-year history, Normann Copenhagen has been a design company who have thought differently, creating furniture that regardless of its whereabouts is – in their own words – ‘designed to make you feel at home.’

Demonstrating the ease in which the familiar and comfortable can extend from living spaces to environments outside the home is the brand’s Sum collection. With multiple configuration possibilities, the modular contract sofa series includes perfectly pared-down and cosy single- and double-seaters that remain inviting even as more elements are added.

Started in 1999 by Jan Andersen and Poul Madsen, Normann Copenhagen has spent the past 20 years applying their comforting home design style to furniture for residential, leisure and professional environments

Another example of how the brand successfully keeps it simple and approachable is the 2018 Herit Chair featuring a curving one-piece back and armrest, twisting in such a natural way that its complexity is almost missed at first glance. Its subtlety, however, is only hiding its more demanding design roots as every curve was carefully considered to follow the shape of the body and provide adequate support.

While championing furniture that helps residential, work and leisure spaces feel like home, Normann Copenhagen has also been focusing on making a positive contribution to the world. From the beginning, the brand has continually supported various charities and cultural projects and have instated working practices that focus on their social and environmental responsibility. In 2012 they established an in-house design and engineering team that have been sourcing new materials and developing new manufacturing techniques in order to create products that can last a lifetime.
