167 Tamburound Armchair
Armchairs from Cassina, Designed by Edward Barber, Jay Osgerby
Product description
A versatile armchair, designed for the dining room influenced by an informal, joyful lifestyle. Tamburound armchair is an idea formed by British duo, Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, to bring a dynamic piece of furniture into the home, one that would encourage interaction between dining companions. Also available as a seat without backrest, this creation is distinguished by the ingenious hidden mechanism that allows the components to rotate. Like satellites that rotate around a planet, the seat and backrest design two graceful orbits, carefully calibrated to ensure fluid, controlled use that allows both elements to rotate 360°. In the armchair version, the rounded shapes of Tamburound are expanded, along with the dimensions of the sinuous post element that connects the two satellites and supports the backrest. Made of cast aluminium, it is available in a number of colours. The Tamburound collection comes in a vast array of upholstery options, completely removable, thanks to a zipper. The armchair structure also reduces to a minimum the use of foamed elements, made of polyurethane with a percentage of polyols derived from biological sources, while the padding is made of recycled PET fibre wadding.
Concept
The English duo, Barber Osgerby, designs a small armchair for Cassina that challenges the traditional formality of the dining chair and reinvents the approach to this piece of furniture, taking inspiration from motion. The Tamburound backrest and seat swivel independently from one another thanks to a clever swivel system developed by Cassina, that encourages more dynamic interaction among diners. The mechanism, located in the steel disk base, is connected to a sinuous pedestal that adjusts the upper part. Like satellites that rotate one around another, the seat and backrest design two harmonious orbits that allow both elements to swivel 360° – a mechanism that makes the small armchair ideal for a formal lunch as well as more festive occasions. The dynamic spirit of the small armchair is accentuated by its aesthetic aspects, curated down to the tiniest detail. The backrest, connected to the seat, enfolds and supports the diner. For Tamburound, Cassina has employed circular materials, like polyurethane with a percentage of polyols derived from biological sources, used in the foam-fill parts and recycled PET in the padding. Tamburound is available in a broad range of removable fabric upholstery options, paired with pedestal in natural aluminium or with finish in matte anthracite, or semi-matte aluminium in China red or Dust colour.
