Concept
The Corona Chair is a distinctive design coveted for its unique composition. Four elliptical-shaped seat pads constitute the back and seat. Fully upholstered and descending in size, the seat pads are affixed to a matt chrome, supportive spring-steel “spine”.
Initially referred to as the “floating chair” due to its light, airy appearance and sculptural qualities, Corona is the culmination of years of experimentation by architect and designer Poul M. Volther. Encouraged by his colleague Hans J. Wegner to work at FDB Møbler under the leadership of Børge Mogensen, who left in 1950, Volther was keen on designing a chair that would minimise the use of fabric, in short supply after WW2. After various attempts, Volther succeeded with the idea of using several cushions with open spaces in between, expressed with elegance years later with the Corona Chair.
A tribute to the functionalist credo that form follows function, The Corona Chair is truly Volther’s masterpiece. The chair has appeared in several movies, fashion features and music videos, boasting a stage career that continues to this day. With its striking silhouette, organic shapes and sleek graphics, the Corona Chair is a statement piece that’s proven to be particularly appealing for executive offices and reception areas, as well as private homes.
The Corona Ottoman is the chair’s companion, featuring a similar shape to the chair’s seat pads, finessed a bit to function as a small stool, as well as a footrest. The Corona Coffee Table was designed with a spherical-shaped glass table top. Like the ottoman, the coffee table is supported by the same stainless-steel base and legs.
