horgenglarus’ classic 1-380 wooden chair is a Swiss design icon. In 2018 horgenglarus decided to add a high-legged version who’s design, materials and look match those of the classic 1-380, but the seating is 80 cm heigh. After two years of working on drafts, models and prototypes, the perfect big brother was ready in September 2018—the 11-380 bar stool. It has all the characteristics that make the classic 1-380 unmistakable: a round seat frame deformed from one piece, elegantly curved hind legs made from one piece, diagonal front legs and a tilted backrest with its typical rounded silhouette. The challenge was to modify the geometry of the individual components in such a way that they adapt to the ergonomic requirements of a bar stool while visibly maintaining its proximate relationship with the classic 1-380. As a new element, a ring made from edged chrome-nickel flat steel or black powder-coated steel was added to interlink the legs and trace the seat frame’s geometry. The steel ring on its own is used as a foot rest; from a structural point of view, it is not needed because the highly stressable alliance of seat frame and legs is fully sufficient even for greater seating heights.
Naturally, the 11-380 bar stool shares all the quality characteristics distinguishing its smaller sister the chair classic 1-380: the use of beech wood, a renewable material; the design’s clarity and elegance; the precise manufacturing of the craftsmanship. Available in beech and oak timbers in many different colours. There is also an upholstered version (model 11-383).
