Concept
No other word in the Danish language has become as internationally celebrated as "hygge". A word so difficult to define, and yet so simple in practice. Hygge is all about feeling good – security, warmth and comfort all form part of its DNA, and it is precisely these qualities that provide the template for Simon Legald’s Hyg lounge series.
With Hyg, Simon Legald has designed an exclusive range, in which soft lines and encircling contours create a cozy and pleasant space. Hyg is made for hygge. The series, which consists of a sofa, armchairs and footstool, is like a warm and heartfelt embrace of shape.
Formed for contemplation
Hyg’s ample silhouette radiates a primary organic purity. Its voluminous form is offset by a narrow contour, which hones and refines its expression. The high sides lightly shield off the room, while a broad seat makes it possible to assume a wide range of relaxed seating postures.
”My vision for Hyg was to create a room within the room; a place that gives you a feeling of peace and security, with an expressivity that is playful and free. The design’s concave form invites for contemplation. You can snuggle into the armchair with a cup of coffee and a book, while the sofa version brings the focus towards the center; towards companionship and conversation”, Simon Legald tells us.
A product of hygge
The creation of Hyg, from concept to finished product, was a back-to-front process. Simon Legald and his design team took the idea apart and tested volumes, lightness, strength and thickness in a long and comprehensive examination, until all of the pieces of the jigsaw puzzle were in place.
The result is an uncompromising design, in which comfort and aesthetics go hand in hand. A steel framework ensures stability and strength, while the rest of Hyg is made of molded PU foam. This allows for soft curves with sharp precision, and for refining the shape for optimum comfort. For example, the furniture has molded lumbar support, which makes the seating position extra comfortable. The upholstering of the sculptural form is a work of art in itself, and has been undertaken with care and expertise by highly skilled upholsterers. And hygge? Well that runs through every aspect of the design:
”The Hyg range is an interpretation of hygge, but in its own way, it is also a product of hygge. As an integral part of Danish culture, hygge emerges in the trustworthy and informal atmosphere that permeates our working culture. It also comes through in our way of thinking about design, which is built around honesty in the design concept and a love of social and domestic life. These are the preconditions under which Hyg has been created”, he says.
Everyday luxury
Thanks to its unparalleled quality, Hyg is everyday luxury of the highest caliber. The level of attention paid in its making can be seen and felt, and the armchairs are even available with a tilt function, which can be customized according to the user’s weight. All that remains is to sit well back and let yourself be immersed in coziness and contentment. The enveloping design of the range can add a sense of security and privacy to a hectic environment, making the furniture eminently suitable for public spaces. Hyg is a design that nourishes both the eye and the soul, and which brings warmth and personality to any room.
The range is made to order with upholstery in textiles or leather and legs in oak or black stained oak. The armchairs are also available as swivel chairs in polished or black aluminum.
